An Open Letter

A Letter to Anyone Still on Omeprazole

It wasn't the coffee, and it wasn't the tomatoes. For a lot of people it is the valve at the top of the stomach, and when it sits loose it lets go the moment you lie flat.

Thirty days. Every cent back, empty packaging included.

Reflux runs on two clocks. Covering both takes three jobs.

Listen,

You have been told a lot of things about your reflux, and almost all of them put the blame on your plate.

Cut the coffee. Cut the tomatoes. Cut the chocolate, the citrus, the onions, the wine. Eat by seven, then by six-thirty. You did all of it. You have a list of safe foods you could recite in your sleep. And you still wake up a little after two in the morning with acid in your throat.

So here is the part nobody put plainly. It was not the coffee. It was not the tomatoes. There is a ring of muscle at the top of your stomach, and its entire job is to stay shut. All day, while you are upright, gravity covers for it. The moment you lie flat, gravity stops covering for it, and how tightly that valve holds becomes the only thing between your stomach and your throat for the next six or eight hours.

That is why two in the morning and not two in the afternoon.

It is also why the two things sitting in your house right now cannot reach it. Antacids neutralize what has already come up. They arrive after. A once-a-day pill lowers how much acid gets made, which is real, and which is a different job entirely. Neither one touches the valve, because neither one was ever built to.

None of that is a failure on your part. It is a targeting problem, and it has been running for years.

What you already tried

You did not do nothing. You did the wrong-shaped somethings.

Before we say a word about what we make, we want to go through what you have already bought. Not to call it junk. It was not junk, and you were right to try all of it.

The problem is narrower than that, and it is the same problem five times over. Each one was a single thing, taken at a single moment, aimed at a problem that has two.

You slept on your left. You changed the diet. You raised the head of the bed, and when that was not enough you added the pillow. And every morning you took the pill.

Most of them never touched the valve. Not because you picked badly, but because none of them was built for the moment the valve is on its own.

And if you went further than that, if you got as far as the jars and the capsules, then this next part is the one you have been waiting for someone to say out loud.

  • 01 · Apple cider vinegar

You were told your acid was too low, not too high

This is the most common reversal on the internet, and there is a logic to it that is worth respecting. The argument goes that weak digestion lets food sit and ferment, and that a little acid before a meal moves things along. Whole brands are built on that single idea. So you held your nose and drank it.

Whatever you believe about that argument, notice what kind of argument it is. It is a claim about how much acid you have. It says nothing about whether the valve above your stomach holds when you lie down, and it says nothing about what happens to a full stomach the moment you go flat. Plenty of people also find they simply cannot get it down, or that it burns on the way in, which is its own answer.

Aimed at the amount. Not at the mechanics, and not at the hours you are horizontal.

  • 02 · DGL on its own

The right idea, doing the wrong job

Deglycyrrhizinated licorice is the one on this list we like most, and we will say why in a moment. You bought the chewables, or the tablets, and the promise was that it would soothe and support the lining of your stomach. For a lot of people it does something. The phrase that comes up over and over is that it kind of helped, and that it was never enough on its own.

That is exactly right, and it is not DGL's fault. Supporting a lining is maintenance work, not a barrier. Nothing about it sits on top of a meal, and nothing about it changes what the valve does at one in the morning. You gave a lining ingredient a mechanical problem to solve.

We use DGL too. Not as the argument. As one part sitting next to the part that does the mechanical work, at the moment that window is actually open.

Right idea, wrong job. A lining ingredient cannot stop anything from moving.

  • 03 · Slippery elm

Soothing is not the same as covering

Slippery elm is usually the first natural thing people try, and the thinking behind it is genuinely mechanical, which puts it closer to the mark than most of this list. Mixed with water it turns into a mucilage, a slick gel, and the idea is that the gel coats and calms whatever it touches on the way down.

Two things happen. The first is that many people never find out whether it works, because the jar ends up half-used at the back of a cupboard. The second matters more. Something soothing that passes through is not the same as something that stays and sits on top. It goes down with everything else, and it is gone well before midnight, which is exactly when you needed it.

And to be fair about our own product: yes, ours is also a powder you stir into water. Not because powders are pleasant. Because a raft has to form on top of a meal inside your stomach, and there is no capsule that does that.

Soothes on the way past. Nothing left in place by the time you lie down.

  • 04 · Probiotics

The right organ, the wrong end of it

This one you probably still have. The story is gut balance, and it is not a silly story. There are real arguments about what long-term acid suppression does to the bacteria further down.

But notice where that conversation is happening. It is happening downstream, over weeks, in your intestines. Your problem is happening at the very top of your stomach, in the ninety minutes after your largest meal and again in the flat hours after midnight. Probiotics support microbiome balance. They do not sit on top of a meal, and they do not tighten a valve. They were never in the room at the moment your reflux actually happens.

Which is also why you could never tell whether they were working. They were part of a stack of five things, and the nights did not change.

Downstream, over weeks. Your problem is upstream, in two specific windows.

  • 05 · The wedge pillow

This one worked, and that is the point

We are not going to tell you the pillow did nothing, because that is not true and you would know it. The wedge is the only thing on this list that is actually in the right window, and for a lot of people it takes the edge off. Some of you have slept on one for four years.

Look at what it does, though. It borrows back a little of the gravity you lose the moment you lie down. It is standing in for the valve, using furniture. And it is still standing in for the valve on the night you sleep at a friend's house, and on the night you finally want to lie flat like a person.

Think about what that pillow has been telling you every night. You worked out years ago that the night was the problem. Nobody ever handed you anything for it except an angle.

Gravity was doing the valve's job. Move the gravity, and you still have not closed anything.

Each covered one window. Reflux has two.

The two windows

What each window actually needs

There are two moments in your day when reflux is possible, and they are almost opposites, which is why nothing built for one of them ever handles the other.

The first window is upright, right after your largest meal. Your stomach is full. There is a pool of acidic stomach contents sitting there, and for the next stretch it can escape upward. You are vertical, so gravity is helping you, and the honest thing to say is that most of your days are survivable. This window is mechanical. What it needs is not less acid. It needs a lid on the pool.

The second window is flat: the six to eight hours you spend horizontal, from the moment you lie down until you get up. This one is a different animal, because four things you rely on all day switch off at once. Gravity stops helping. You are not swallowing, so nothing gets cleared. Saliva, which buffers all day, largely stops. And you are unconscious for six to eight uninterrupted hours. In that stretch the tone of that valve is the only thing between your stomach and your throat.

The raft floats on top of what you just ate, hours before you lie down.

Two windows. Three jobs to cover them, because the night window has two separate needs and the day window has one.

Day barrier. Night valve support.

Job one · Barrier · by day

A raft on top of your biggest meal

Sodium alginate is pulled from seaweed. Stirred into water and drunk after your largest meal, it forms a light gel raft that floats on top of what you just ate. Not a coating on your throat. A physical layer sitting on top of the pool, put in place hours before you lie down. It is not absorbed into your body. A 2017 meta-analysis of 14 randomized trials (2,095 patients, Diseases of the Esophagus) found alginate-based therapies were significantly more likely to resolve reflux symptoms than placebo or antacids (odds ratio 4.42). Day Shield uses the same alginate salt, sodium alginate, at 1,000 mg per stick. Those trials dosed several times a day; we make no claim to match their dosing. Research on the ingredient class, not on the finished product.

Sodium Alginate · 1,000 mg · day drink

The calcium carbonate and sodium bicarbonate in the same stick are not there to be an antacid. They are the chemistry that makes the raft form and float. The buffering is a side effect, not the point.

Job two · Valve · at night

Not the sleep kind of melatonin

This is the part people roll their eyes at, and then read twice. Melatonin is not only a sleep hormone. Researchers report the gut contains at least 400× more melatonin than the pineal gland, the gland in the brain that releases it at night (a review in Digestive Diseases and Sciences, 2002). Melatonin has been studied for its effect on lower esophageal sphincter tone, in one small clinical study, at 3 mg taken at bedtime. Night Restore provides 2.7 mg. Research on the ingredient, not on the finished product. If you already own a bottle of 10 mg sleep gummies, this is a deliberately smaller amount, aimed at the valve rather than at knocking you out.

Melatonin · 2.7 mg · night capsules
Job three · Lining · at night

The part that takes actual time

After years of this, the lining stays worn and tender, and that is the slow half of the problem. In a randomized, placebo-controlled trial, a zinc-carnosine complex helped support intestinal lining integrity in healthy adults exposed to a common gut irritant. Night Restore provides 135 mg of zinc carnosine per serving, paired with 900 mg of L-glutamine. Research on the ingredient, not on the finished product. DGL rides along in the day drink at 500 mg, listed at its full dose, with no study claim attached to it.

Zinc-L-Carnosine 135 mg + L-Glutamine 900 mg (night) · DGL 500 mg (day)

That is the whole routine. One stick in water after your largest meal. Two capsules thirty minutes before bed. No melatonin in the day drink, so nothing makes you foggy at your desk.

One more thing, and we would rather say it than have you find it elsewhere. If you have tried to come off your prescription before and everything came back worse, that was not weakness. In a 2009 randomized, double-blind trial published in Gastroenterology, 120 healthy volunteers with no history of reflux took a proton pump inhibitor for eight weeks. After they stopped, 44% reported clinically relevant acid-related symptoms, heartburn, acid regurgitation or dyspepsia, compared with 15% on placebo. That is a fact about a drug, not an instruction. This is built to sit alongside what your doctor has you on, never to replace it. Talk to your doctor before changing any prescription.

“Six years, more doctors than I can count. Prescription meds did next to nothing for the nights. The 2am episodes have gotten rare enough that I actually sleep now. That alone is worth it to me.”

Robert H. · Erie, PA · Verified Buyer

★★★★★

“I already take melatonin for sleep so I assumed this was basically the same thing and rolled my eyes a little. It's not. The nighttime reflux is the part that changed for me.”

Anthony P. · Cranston, RI · Verified Buyer

What you are risking

The honest part: you have been wrong about this before

We want to end on the thing that is actually stopping you, because it is not the price and we both know it.

It is that you have spent money on this category before, more than once, and each time you had to quietly admit to yourself afterwards that you fell for it again. That is a worse feeling than losing sixty-nine dollars. It is the reason the jar of slippery elm is still in the cupboard instead of the bin.

So we built the guarantee for that, not for the money.

Most people take the middle one, and the reason is arithmetic rather than persuasion. The lining job is the slow one. Three kits is ninety days of supply. The money-back guarantee covers 30 days from delivery.

You are already spending on this. The antacids that are gone by Thursday. The pillow. The half-used jars. All of that money manages the nights. None of it ends them.

Thirty days. Every cent back.

Take the full thirty days and use it properly. If the nights have not changed, send the kits back for a full refund, empty packaging included. We do not ask for unopened boxes, because a product you never opened tells neither of us anything.

It is a one-time purchase, not a subscription. Nothing renews, nothing to cancel, no card on file waiting to charge you next month.
